There’s something happening out on the water. Sailing holidays – once the preserve of seasoned sea dogs and the seriously wealthy – have quietly become one of the hottest travel trends of the year. Here’s why more people than ever are swapping the sun lounger for the helm.
The ‘Untouched’ Problem
Travellers are tired. Tired of queuing for the same Instagram spots, tired of overbooked resorts, tired of paying a fortune for a beach experience shared with five thousand other people. The desire for something more authentic – more personal – has been building for years, and sailing holidays answer that call beautifully.
When you have your own yacht or catamaran, the crowds simply don’t apply to you. You can pull into a secluded bay that the tour buses will never reach, drop the anchor, and have it entirely to yourself. That kind of freedom is becoming increasingly rare on land – and increasingly prized.
Flexibility Is the New Luxury
The definition of luxury travel has shifted. Thread-count and turndown service still have their fans, but more and more people are deciding that flexibility – the ability to go where you want, when you want, and change your mind on a whim – is worth more than any hotel amenity.
A sailing holiday gives you all of that. Your accommodation moves with you. Your itinerary is yours to shape. If you love a place, you stay longer. If you’re not feeling it, you sail on. It’s a level of control over your own holiday that no resort on earth can offer.
The Social Travel Boom
Post-pandemic, group travel has surged. People are making up for lost time with friends and family, and a chartered yacht is one of the best group travel formats there is – a shared adventure, built-in quality time, and a natural cure for the “where shall we eat?” argument, because you’re already anchored somewhere spectacular.
Catamarans in particular have become hugely popular for this reason – the extra space and stability make them ideal for groups, families, or anyone who wants the sailing experience without feeling like they’re living in a cupboard.
It’s More Accessible Than People Think
One of the biggest barriers to sailing holidays has always been the assumption that they’re impossibly expensive, or that you need years of experience to take the helm. Neither is really true anymore.
A bareboat charter for a 3-cabin yacht in Croatia, for example, can start at under €1,000 for the week – which, when you split it between a group and factor in that it covers both your accommodation and your transport between destinations, starts to look like very good value indeed. And if you’re not yet qualified to skipper yourself, adding a professional skipper to your booking is a straightforward and surprisingly affordable option.
The industry has also done a lot of work to make the booking process less intimidating. Live pricing, real-time availability, and the ability to search, compare and book online have made it feel much more like booking any other holiday – which is exactly how it should feel.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
Charter bookings have been climbing steadily, and 2026 looks set to be a record year. Mediterranean destinations like Croatia and Greece remain perennially popular, but there’s growing interest in the Caribbean and further afield as travellers grow in confidence and ambition.
The sea has always been there. The boats have always been there. What’s changed is that more people than ever have realised that a sailing holiday isn’t a fantasy reserved for someone else – it’s a genuinely brilliant holiday that’s well within reach.
And once you’ve done it once, you’ll be back every year. Trust us on that one.
